The Time Lord approached the disguised TARDIS from around the corner and stopped suddenly. He was accustomed to the inexplicable, but this sight rendered his mouth agape.
“I clearly recall you being in pristine condition when I left here to pursue that elusive rogue.”
He looked about, but a crimson telephone box containing multiple trays of flora punctuated by a pigeon cooing on the top layer hadn’t yet attracted attention. This was somewhat peculiar for London.
“Very well, then,” he said reaching into his inner jacket pocket. “One sonic screwdriver to the rescue. Then we’ll deal with this pesky Doctor.”
It’s Wednesday and once again time to participate in Rochelle Wisoff-Fields’ 18 April 2025 edition of Friday Fictioneers. The idea is to use the image above as the prompt for crafting a poem or short story no more than 100 words long. My word count is exactly 100.
I admit that I’m not a Doctor Who fan. I probably saw an episode or two back when Tom Baker was playing the Doctor and wasn’t particularly impressed. However, it’s impossible to avoid references to the show and it’s characters if you’re at all into science fiction.
So, a TARDIS was the first thing I thought about when I saw the telephone box. Since the Doctor is described as a “rogue” Time Lord who stole his TARDIS, that assumes that someone may be after him since he’s a criminal. That’s what I took off with.

My book Our Legacy, The Stars: A Tom Corbett Adventure has gotten four and five star reviews Amazon and a five star review on goodreads.
Based on the 1950s television show Tom Corbett Space Cadet, the book is updated in terms of our modern understanding of science as well as more nuanced characterizations and plot.
The Literary Post says:
“Pyles takes us back to a simpler time in science fiction, complete with all of the warm nostalgic fuzzies that go along with it.”

In my mind I’m still fiddling with the screw driver. I’d probably use a shovel. Ha ha

I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a sonic shovel.

I could feel the adventure here and now you have me wondering what this looks like in pristine condition – also – you and another writer have introduced me to TARDIS – so thanks for that — the “Time And Relative Dimension In Space”, which a fictional hybrid of a time machine and spacecraft! very cool

I have never watched a single episode of Doctor Who but I love what you did here 🙂

Thanks. When the show made a come back a few years ago, my daughter encouraged me to watch it, but I would have felt compelled to watch every episode since the 1960 just to “catch up” and I wasn’t ready to commit that much of my time to watching TV.

My niece got into it. Wonder how long it took her to watch em all!

The newer series is only about five years old, so maybe not that long.

Yeah, I think that’s when my niece started watching it and then went back to the originals.

Nicely done. A mystery awaits…
I admit, I did think of writing a Doctor Who story. You did well for someone who is not a big fan.

Thanks. The basic concepts are all over the place, so it’s hard to be completely unaware.

I became a Dr Who fan with the reboot, but once Steven Moffat took over as show runner my interest waned and I stopped watching. For only watching one or two episodes this is a really good take.
