As I’ve mentioned before, the book features my short story “The Heavens Declare His Glory.” Here’s a short excerpt.

A silent plea to God on his unspeaking lips, he aimed and fired. The energy bolt fell short, striking the sand five meters behind the creature. A pool of molten glass formed but the dragon was unharmed. Zeb pulled the trigger again but nothing happened. A red light flashed on the power pack telling him what he already knew.

“Please, God Almighty….” The prayer stuck in his throat as tears fell from his eyes. Reflexes caused him to replace the now useless pistol in its holster. Then he stood and ran. He had no hope of conquering his foe with his bare hands, but he couldn’t just sit by and watch Ceriz and her child be devoured.

Zeb was limping as he tried to run, afraid he was too far away to get to Ceriz in time. He was afraid even if he made it, that he could do nothing against a monstrous evil that size. Raging pain shot up his entire right side with every clumsy step. He was soaked in his own sweat and blood, gritty sand clinging to his body.

The creature stopped and two heads turned to face him. The stellar illumination in the now night sky was brilliant. Zeb could clearly see the expression of disdain on the two faces.

“You surprise even me, boy. Very well. Come. Do your worst. I certainly owe you for the hurts you’ve inflicted upon me.”

The great dragon paused, a brief delay in the execution of Ceriz and her child. She was doubled over again. He thought she was in labor before but now he wasn’t sure. Would the beast wait until she delivered and then eat the newborn in front of his mother?
