Griffith had been searching for the last syllable, the last few letters of The Word for twenty centuries. It was rather anti-climactic that he should find it on a cheap bookshelf in this hovel.
He ran a grateful finger over the binding of the black tome on the lower shelf. The spine contained a letter only he could read. Once he assembled The Word and spoke it, a peace beyond all understanding would encompass the globe.
A sound from the doorway. “You have led Legion on a merry chase, Griffith. Or is it that we let you bring us here?”
It’s Wednesday and once again time to participate in Rochelle Wisoff-Fields’ 2 Feb 2024 edition of Friday Fictioneers. The idea is to use the image above as the prompt for crafting a poem or short story no more than 100 words long. My word count is exactly 100.
Today, I mined a story I have once again in submission. The story is of an immortal man on a quest to assemble a special Word, one letter at a time. Once assembled and spoken, the Word will give the world complete peace and freedom from strife.
Unfortunately, Griffith has enemies, a group known as Legion for they are many, and they’ll do anything to stop him. Will he succeed even in the presence of his enemies?

The SciFi anthology Shoot the Devil 2: Dark Matter has received a wonderful review which mentions my short story “The Heavens Declare His Glory.” Please have a read.

I felt a little lost at the end, but your afterward cleared that up. Good luck with the submission and I’ll watch for a link to the accepted story! 🙂

That’s quite a long wait & worthy find!
Hope he could bring peace to the world & also to the people who were chasing him.

The “people” are actually demon possessed, so “peace” is a relative term. Thanks.

Wonder what the words means or what powers it holds once it has been found?

I really enjoyed this. Put me in mind of the age-old struggle between God and Satan, who is spoken of in the New Testament as “Legion.” The end of that story is still to be seen.

Darkness will never stop trying to extinguish light. Great story, James. Usually it’s the bad guys trying to find a device that will destroy the world.

“”a peace beyond all understanding would encompass the globe.”” Great expectations, I expect Griffith will achieve this task, in his world at least. Great tale of fantasy.

“A peace beyond all understanding.”
I wonder if this will ever be realized.
Intriguing read, James.

Thanks. Actually, it’s a bible quote: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:6-7

Thank you, James. I’m aware. I used to be active in our church choir and that verse was part of the words to an anthem we did.

Sorry. Didn’t mean to preach. Over a text-only platform, it can’t really know what people are and aren’t familiar with.

Oh, no! Not preachy at all; sorry it sounded that way.
I was just sharing a memory with you and should have stated it as such.
It’s a beautiful verse; I love the way Paul writes “do not be anxious about anything”.

I felt the suspense and was hopeful until Legion spoke. Alas, such is life. Well told

I like the idea of his quest. May he succeed as soon as possible; we could all use some of that elusive peace.
