I am totally thrilled to announce that my 16-part serial “Our Destiny, The Stars” featuring Tom Corbett, Space Cadet is now available through Kindle Vella.
If you’re old enough, you may remember the Tom Corbett television show which ran from 1950-1955, pretty much pre-dating even me. When the fine folks at Starry Eyed Press asked me if I’d write a brand new Corbett adventure, one modernized with our current understanding of space travel and knowledge of our solar system, I was over-the-moon excited.
I could have chosen to do a short story or novel, but then I thought it seemed like so much fun to publish the story as a serial through the Amazon Kindle Vella platform (To learn more about what Kindle Vella is and what it does, click HERE). I tried to frame it like the real old school science fiction stories in the pulp era or the old movie serials from the 1930s through ’50s. As a little kid, I came in at the end of the movie serial age and still remember watching them. I crafted my brand-new Tom Corbett science fiction thriller with all that in mind.
I included his companions from the show including Roger Manning, Astro, Captain Steve Strong, and Dr. Joan Dale, plus introduced new characters, one of whom is a mysterious woman who may hold the key to saving the Earth or destroying it. Our modern understanding of science including physics, astronomy, and planetary geography made it necessary for me to update the “Corbett universe” including the backstories of the characters. Those updates are also an interwoven part of the mystery Tom and the crew of their ship the Polaris have to solve.
Travel with our heroes from Venus, to the Moon, to Mars, and beyond. I can only hope that I was able to capture the legacy of one of television’s earliest journeys into science fiction.
Thank you to the writers, producers, directors, and especially the actors, Frankie Thomas as Tom, Al Markim as Astro, Jan Merlin as Roger, and Patricia Ferris as Dale. Without you and the others, none of this would have been possible.
