“It’s just a fake door, Jillian. Elves don’t really live in the tree.” Ten-year-old Sam strode towards the trunk.
“Don’t,” the eight-year-old girl cried. “If they get mad, they’ll cast a spell on us.” She ran to her brother and grabbed his arm.
He shook her off. “Watch this.” Sam gripped the knob and pulled away the little door exposing only bark. “See?”
“You’re no fun,” Jill pouted.
“Let’s go get an ice cream,” Sam offered.
After the kids marched off, the knothole popped open. Two elves poked their heads out of the window. Pip asked, “Are they gone yet?”
It’s Wednesday and once again time to participate in Rochelle Wisoff-Fields’ 26 April 2024 edition of Friday Fictioneers. The idea is to use the image above as the prompt for crafting a poem or short story no more than 100 words long. My word count is exactly 100.
This one was pretty easy since the wee door at the base of the tree conjures up the idea that something special is living inside. Jill and Sam popped up in my imagination and the rest was a matter of editing.
To read other stories based on the prompt, visit inlinkz.
I added to my announcement of the publication of the start of my 16 chapter story based on the old “Tom Corbett, Space Cadet” TV show.
Each new episode drops on Saturday and the first two of them are already available. Having tested the link both on my PC and my Kindle Fire tablet, I can get to and read each chapter FOR FREE! So can you.
Please support your friendly neighborhood indie SciFi author by reading the chapters, press the “like” or “thumbs up” button (if you like what you read) for each individual “episode” and don’t forget to leave a comment for each chapter.
Last Saturday, Episode 3: “The Secret Passenger” dropped adding to the mystery.
Visit Our Legacy, The Stars: A Tom Corbett Adventure and start having fun.
Smart of them to have a fake door to hide the real opening. Love that the elves are not nefarious ones 🙂

Thanks, Dale. No one is nefarious, just curious.

Smart little elves :) Smart of Sam to deflect Jill’s attitude with an offer of ice cream! It works for me!

James, I’m glad you showed them as shy and benevolent beings.

Thanks. They don’t like to socialize with people a lot.

Very cute and clever, James. Her brother should have listened to the wisdom of his younger sister (being a younger sister). 🙂

The point was that neither one of them could. The elves are relieved. Thanks.

Great ending. (And I like the rest of it, too.) Jillian’s going to believe in the magic, no matter what, and she’s right.

Of course it is fake, but on some level Jill probably knows this. She will most likely remember while eating her ice cream.

The elves are hoping she’ll keep these things to herself from now on.
