If you like my work, buy me a virtual cup of coffee at Ko-Fi.

He was the only one who didn’t have a name. He was the one who had to choose the other names who were right for the job.

The inside cover of the folder said:

We encounter so many inspiring makers and performers, each one of them so rich in their work, so specific in their approach to a creation, so different from each other.

They were dancers, actors, mimes, each especially gifted. He scanned their photos and read their stories. Tonight, he would select five and then begin to mold them.

Soon, they would be ready to save the world.

It’s Wednesday and once again time to participate in Rochelle Wisoff-Fields’ 24 May 2024 edition of Friday Fictioneers. The idea is to use the image above to craft a poem or short story no more than 100 words long. My word count is exactly 100.

When I approach these images, I usually try to interpret them as literally as possible. But when I Googled “mimekitchen,” among the other results, I came up with Mime Fabriek (“Mime Kitchen”). The site is based in the Netherlands and I found the idea of each performer defining their universe as a “kitchen” intriguing.

Looking at their photos and bios, I got a sort of Mission: Impossible vibe. In the original television series, Jim Phelps (Peter Graves) selected a special missions team from a group of people each experts in their field, including performers (for instance Paris, played by Leonard Nimoy, was a stage magician and master of disguise). What if the best people for a particular world-saving job were all performers?

  1. An interesting story! Congrats on your Vella story too! I just launched a story this month also. It’s the wild , Wild West but it’s fun to get a story out there and hopefully build a following. Good luck!
