My science fiction short story “I Don’t Want To Be Human” has been accepted by Cloaked Press for their 2024 edition of Spring Into SciFi. I have stories published in a number of “Cloaked” anthologies over the past several years and am excited to be part of their latest project.

“I Don’t Want To Be Human” is both an atypical exploration into the “intent” of Artificial Intelligence, and turning the common trope of robots and androids wanting to be more human on its head.

Here’s a small sample of the story:

“You really like it in that steampunk reality?” Josue Hunter stood in this secret museum admiring the flying machine with his best friend Wyatt Ellison.

“You sound so surprised, Josue. I got into time traveling for the adventure, so when history made this turn, you knew I’d jump for it.”

“And you knew I’d pass, giving up time travel. My universe became safe and mundane, well except for this.” He motioned toward alternate reality’s first steam driven aeroplane from the mid-19th century.

“You needed your history to be safe for your family. The time change gave you that, my friend.”

Wow! That came up fast.

Spring Into SciFi 2019 is Here and Other News!

© James Pyles

I know I haven’t been around a lot lately. My wife injured her back (it’s slowly getting better) and I needed to take care of my two grandchildren during the day all this week including getting my granddaughter to and from swimming lessons. She also just turned four a few days ago, which kept things busy.

As you can see above, my author’s copy of the Cloaked Press anthology Spring Into SciFi 2019 Edition arrived. When I get a chance, I’ll start digging into it. Can’t wait to see what other terrific stories it contains besides my short story “The Recall.”

Speaking of which, last Wednesday, I was interviewed by Will Martinez for a podcast at Dark Fringe Radio. Will and I made a connection on twitter when I was doing research on the Wow! Signal while writing “The Recall.” He said if the story was published, he’d like to interview me. Well, it was, and he did.

Apparently there was some delay getting approval for Cloaked Press to be listed as a publisher in the Library of Congress’ new system, but things are moving forward. I was beginning to think the anthology title “Spring into SciFi” would have to be changed into “Summer into SciFi.”

The book also has to be approved for distribution by Amazon, so another speed bump however, Jonas’s cover looks fabulous.

More info soon.

About a week ago (sorry, I’ve been away, I’ve been busy) I announced that my short story “The Recall” had been accepted for the 2019 edition of the Cloaked Press anthology “Spring Into SciFi.” No further news is yet available except that one of the contributors is a well-known name in science fiction (can’t wait to find out who).

However, as you can see above, on the Cloaked Press Facebook page, I did find a proposed cover image for the upcoming anthology. Pretty stoked.
